In contrast to some of my other bands, Urban Legend is primarily tonality-based. The tunes are oriented around changes and harmony. The music is eclectic, ranging from atonal countrywestern to ECM-like grooves.
Super-versatile Steve Cardenas is our guitarist. He and I wrote some of the music together. I love the process of bouncing ideas off each other and arriving at stuff that neither would have come up with on our own. The other horn player is my frequent collaborator, the unique and brilliant Bill McHenry on tenor sax.
On our gigs the bass and drum positions have been filled by some of the best guys around. Depending on who wasn’t out on tour, we’ve had Mike McGuirk, Ben Street and Ben Allison on bass & Dan Rieser, Rudy Royston, Jochen Rueckert and Rodney Green on drums.
Audiences really love this music--it’s listenable and accessible, but not dumb. We’re planning to record our first album in 2011.
