Cornelia Street Café
This Friday, Feb. 20th,
John McNeil brings a new quintet to Cornelia Street Café to kick off
a four-day celebration leading up to Mexican Flag Day (Feb. 24th).
El Día de la Bandera (Flag Day) is especially worthy of celebration this year
because it's the 21st anniversary of the official adoption of the current flag's design.
Because 21 consists of the first two Arabic numerals (1&2) in reverse order, Mexicans
all over the world have imbued it with a mystical significance on a par with the
Ark of the Covenant or Fats Navarro's mouthpiece.
The first 20 customers will receive a pair of platinum talons which attach
comfortably to the hands. These can be used to eat scampi or to grasp the
snake placed under every table. Also, all those dressed in red, white and green
and carrying a cactus will receive preferential seating.
Juan McNeil --- trompeta
Noah Preminger --- saxofón
Frank Carlberg -- piano acústico
Dean Johnson --bajo
Jochen Rueckert -- tambores
P.S. If you can't make it out on Friday, on Feb. 18th John McNeil is beginning a regular
Wednesday night gig at Puppets Jazz Bar in Park Slope, 9 -1. That's hours, not odds.
